International Economic Law and the Digital Divide
By: Kariyawasam, R.
Published by: Edward Elgar Publishing, Inc.

Rohan Kariyawasam begins by looking predominantly at the rise of international digital networks. He offers an introduction to the networks used in the delivery of electronic products and network-based transactions, and the application of WTO law to the sector. He then suggests how developing countries can use economic law and technology to tap digital markets in the developed world. The book also argues that the advance of basic living standards in some developing countries can be achieved through technological processes, but that this cannot happen without such states paying greater attention to the enforcement of economic, social and cultural rights at home. Picking up the property rights debate (including through bilateral trade), the author argues that ensuring beneficial technology transfer will require balancing foreign investor rights to protect intellectual property. It will also involve restrictions imposed by competition law and WTO surveillance to check the possible misuse of market power by multinational companies. The proposed mixture of measures should, he argues, provide incentives for Foreign Direct Investment. Providing a thorough review of the application of WTO law to the telecommunications sector and the regulation of international digital networks, this book will be of great interest to postgraduate students in international economic law and international development law, as well as those interested in human rights law and technology. It will also appeal to government regulators, NGOs and technologists interested in ICTs and development. more...

Intifada Hits the Headlines
By: Dor, Daniel
Published by: Indiana University Press

In this nuanced and detailed study of newspaper reporting during the escalation of the second Intifada in the fall of 2000, Daniel Dor shows how real events are subject to distortion and manipulation by the media. In an analysis of the heart of Israel's media establishment, he finds a wide gap between the reality reported by field reporters and the eventual newspaper accounts framed by editors. Dor argues it is the influence of fear, anger, ignorance, and a desire to please and to sell newspapers that threatens the freedom of the press in a liberal democracy. more...

Iran
By: Farndon, John
Published by: Icon Books

- Could Iran build and use nuclear weapons? - Might London become the target of an Iranian nuclear attack? - How would we be affected if Iran cut off oil supplies? - Does the West’s attitude drive young Iranians to extremism? - What can the West do to reduce the Iranian threat? Iran’s President Ahmadinejad shocked the Western world when he described the murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis as a myth and called for Israel to be ‘wiped off the map’. No wonder then that some Western leaders are terrified at the prospect of Iran resuming its nuclear programme – and perhaps building nuclear weapons. Iran is an ‘axis of evil’ member and America is not alone in arguing that Iran is a huge danger. But are the doomsayers right? Is Iran the rabid Islamic dog and pariah state that some paint it? It is in fact, others say, the most prosperous, sophisticated, cultured nation in the Middle East, despite the President’s shocking outbursts and often belligerent stance. Iran: Everything You Need to Know gives you the facts and lets you form your own opinion on this crucial world issue. more...
