Advanced Routes for Polymer Toughening
By: Martuscelli, E.; Musto, P.; Ragosta, G.
Published by: Elsevier Science

This volume is an account of the various approaches used to improve the toughness of polymer matrices. The correlations among the molecular structure of the components, the morphology and the mechanical properties of blend systems are stressed. Emphasis is placed on the methods used to control the structure of these materials during processing. The book concentrates on a number of systems which may be regarded as typologies of toughened plastics. From an extensive treatment of these systems more general concepts have been developed. These concepts which are indispensable in the design and formulation of tough polymer blends, include the role of the interface in multicomponent systems, the chemical reactivity of the blend components, the mode and state of dispersion of the second phase, the crystallinity and crystallization conditions, the glass transition temperature etc. The long term activity in the area is mainly reported, which started in the early seventies with the chemical modification of ethylene-propylene copolymers to be used as tougheners of Polyamide-6. Such a system is investigated further both from a fundamental and from an applicative point of view. The volume shows how intellectually stimulating and challenging the field of polymer toughening can be, and is intended to encourage the reader to do more research in this area. more...

Advances in Amino Acid Mimetics and Peptidomimetics
By: Abell, A.
Published by: JAI Press

Peptidomimetics are compounds which mimic the biological activity of peptides while offering the advantages of increased bioavailability, biostability, bioefficiency, and bioselectivity against the natural biological target of the parent peptide. Examples of peptidomimetics have been isolated as natural products, synthesized as libraries from novel subunits, and designed on the basis of X-ray crystallographic studies and through an intricate knowledge of the biological mode of action of natural peptides. They offer challenging synthetic targets and are increasingly important medicinal agents and biological probes. As a consequence, peptidomimetics embrace much of what is modern medicinal and organic chemistry. This volume highlights some recent and exciting developments in the area. more...

Advances in Amino Acid Mimetics and Peptidomimetics
By: Abell, A.
Published by: JAI Press

Peptidomimetics have found wide application as bioavailable, and often potent mimetics of natural peptides. They form the basis of important classes of enzyme inhibitors, they act as receptor agonists and antagonists, and they have even been used to mimic DNA structure. Recent advances in the use of solid-phase organic synthesis have paved the way for the preparation of libraries of these structures to allow the rapid optimization of theri biological properties and hence therapeutic potential. We are also beginning to gain a greater understanding of the structural features of this class of compounds that influence their ability to permeate membranes, and their rate of clearance and metabolism. This volume brings together many of these critical issues by highlighting recent advances in a number of core peptidomimetic-based research. more...

Advances in Asymmetric Synthesis
By: Unknown
Published by: JAI Press

In this first volume of Advances in Asymmetric Synthesis, the authors, each an authority in his field, have demonstrated different pathways that can lead to various classes of compounds with high enantiomeric excess. The importance of choosing the right enantiomer is well illustrated in the chapter by K. Mori in the field of insect chemistry, specifically on the synthesis of chiral pheromones. Here it is demonstrated that in certain cases one enantiomer is bioactive while its antipode is either inactive or active in another insect gender. In some cases the wrong enantiomer can enhance or inhibit the activity of its antipode. more...

Advances in Asymmetric Synthesis
By: Unknown
Published by: JAI Press

Enantioselective synthetic methods are not only in the forefront of chemical and pharmaceutical research but activity in this area is constantly increasing. It is stimulated by the urgency to obtain drugs or compounds of medicinal interest as single anantiomers, and the keeness to synthesize natural products in nonracemic form. This volume presents seven chapters from pioneers and authorities in this rapidly expanding field. more...
