Reinventing France: State and Society in the Twenty-First Century
By: Milner, Dr Susan; Parsons, Dr Nick; Elgie, Robert
Published by: Palgrave
Undermined from above by economic globalization and European integration, and from below by the rise of identity politics, the French state has attempted to redefine its relationship to its citizens. Reinventing France examines the ways in which state action has endeavoured to promote social integration in an increasingly fragmented nation and has challenged traditional concepts of an indivisible Republic and universal citizenship rights in order to achieve the core republican ideals of freedom, equality and solidarity.

Sacred Causes
By: Burleigh, Michael
Published by: Harper Collins
Beginning with the chaotic post–World War I landscape in which religious belief was one way of reordering a world knocked off its axis, Sacred Causes is a penetrating critique of how religion has often been camouflaged by politics. All the bloody regimes and movements of the 20th century are masterfully captured here, from Stalin's Soviet Union, Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's Italy, and Franco's Spain to the war on terror. With style and sophistication, Michael Burleigh shows how the churches, in their various guises, have been swayed by–and contributed to–conflicting secular currents. Sacred Causes brilliantly exposes the way in which fears of socialist movements tempered the churches' response to the threat of totalitarian regimes. Burleigh combines an authoritative survey of history with a timely reminder of the dangers of radical secularism. He asks why no one foresaw the religious implications of massive Third World immigration. And he deftly investigates what is now driving calls for a civic religion to counter the terrorist threats that have so shocked the West.

Sovereign City
By: Parker, Geoffrey
Published by: Reaktion Books
Sovereign City examines the nature of the city-states changing role and traces the evolution of the city as a political entity from ancient times, when it flourished, to the present day, when it is of much diminished importance. Geoffrey Parker examines the city-state as a geopolitical form, as well as its distinctive place within a range of types of states. The rise of the city-state in ancient times is analysed with particular reference to the Greek polis, which Plato and Aristotle considered the perfect type of state. He also examines the Roman example of city-state as imperial capital, as well as the political role of the city in the early Islamic world, assessing the extent to which the term city-state is applicable. He goes on to consider the revival of the European city-state in late Medieval and Renaissance Italy, tracing its extension to northern Europe. The importance of the city-state, as one of the principal forms of geopolitical organization in early modern Europe, culminated with the Hanseatic League of city-states located around the Baltic and the North Sea. The relationship of the League with other emerging types of state, particularly the nation-state, is examined, and the extent to which the nation-state was a cause of the city-states decline is addressed. The author concludes with an examination of the role of the city-state in the contemporary world, focusing on its re-emergence in parts of the Far East and the Islamic world in the post-imperial era. In this context, he assesses the possible role of the city-state in the twenty-first century and beyond.

By: OECD Publishing
Published by: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
International anti-corruption treaties, including the UN Convention against Corruption, require member states to establish two types of anti-corruption institutions one to prevent corruption and the other to combat corruption through law enforcement. The treaties also establish standards for such anti-corruption institutions they should be independent, specialised and have sufficient resources to meet their challenging tasks. This book analyses the main functions of prevention and combating corruption and discusses practical ways to ensure the independence, specialisation and resources of anti-corruption bodies. The book further studies the different forms of specialisation which exist in different countries and describes 14 anti-corruption agencies from around the world, including preventive, law-enforcement and combined or multipurpose agencies. Analysis of key factors which can lead anti-corruption bodies to success or failure, together with a rich body of country specific information, practical facts and contact details will make this book a useful tool for those policy-makers who seek to strengthen anti-corruption institutions in their countries.
