An Ideal Husband is an 1895 comedic stage play by Oscar Wilde which revolves around blackmail and political corruption, and touches on the themes of public and private honour. But he adds that, "No one should be entirely judged by their past.". — Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Intuitive navigation. . Text annotation and mark-up. . more...

The Importance of Being Earnest
By: MobileReference
Published by: MobileReference.com

The Importance of Being Earnest is a play by Oscar Wilde, a comedy of manners on the seriousness of society in either three or four acts (depending on edition) inspired by W. S. Gilbert''s Engaged. It was first performed for the public on February 14, 1895 at the St. James''s Theatre in London. Set in England during the late Victorian era, its primary source of humour is based on characters maintaining fictitious identities to allow them to escape from social obligations. Wilde''s plays had reached a pinnacle of success, and anything new from the playwright was eagerly awaited. The press were always hungry for details and would pursue stories about new plots and characters with a vengeance. To combat this Wilde gave the play a working title, Lady Lancing. The use of seaside town names for leading characters, or the locations of their inception, can be recognised in all four of Wilde''s society plays (Jack''s surname, Worthing, is itself taken from the town where Wilde was staying when he wrote the play). — Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Iron Heel
By: MobileReference
Published by: MobileReference.com

"It is a dystopian work about the rise of an oligarchic tyranny in the United States. It is perhaps the novel in which Jack London''s socialist views are most explicitly on display. A forerunner of science fiction novels and stories of the 1960s and 1970s, the book stresses future changes in society and politics while paying much less attention to technological changes.". from Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. The Jew of Malta
By: Marlowe, Christopher; Lynch, Stephen J. (ed.)
Published by: Hackett Publishing Company, Inc.

This edition answers the needs of both beginning and advanced students:. It features the text of Marlowe's play with modern spelling and punctuation, glosses and annotations on the page, and a thorough Introduction devoted to the play's historical, cultural, and theological contexts. In addition, it includes a generous selection of related texts, including excerpts from Machiavelli's The Prince , Gentillet's Anti-Machiavel , and Bacon's The Advancement of Learning . Its combination of pedagogical acuity and historical craft make Lynch's an excellent edition of Marlowe's play — one that also serves as a fine introduction to Elizabethan drama as a whole. It moreover offers a convenient window on the reception of Machiavelli in England and the representation of Christmas, Jews, and Turks on the Elizabethan stage. more...

Journey's Beginning
By: Brown, Ian (ed.)
Published by: Intellect

The Gateway Theatre Company between 1953 and 1965 was a major force in developing modern Scottish theatre, moving in 1965 to become the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company. The Gateway Theatre and its company were therefore highly influential in the development of theatre in Scotland. They encouraged new writing and young performers to establish a vibrant contemporary tradition of Scottish theatre in a manner complementary to, and at times more important than, that of its sister theatre, the Citizens in Glasgow. Both theatre building and company are regarded with enormous affection and J35respect. This book provides authoritative brief histories of the building and the company incorporating much original research, an essay on the links between the theatre and the Church of Scotland (its landlord post second world war), and appreciations of two leading figures in the operation of the theatre and the company. These are Sadie Aitken, 'the Caledonian Lilian Bayliss' (a theatrical legend), and Robert Kemp (playwright and a key figure in post war theatre). more...

Kidnapped
By: MobileReference
Published by: MobileReference.com

Kidnapped is a historical fiction adventure novel by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. Written as a "boys'' novel" and first published in the magazine Young Folks from May to July 1886, the novel has attracted the praise and admiration of writers as diverse as Henry James, Jorge Luis Borges, and Seamus Heaney. As historical fiction, it is set around 18th century Scottish events, notably the "Appin Murder", which occurred near Ballachulish in 1752 in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rising. Many of the characters, and one of the principals, Alan Breck Stewart, were real people. The political situation of the time is skilfully portrayed from different viewpoints, and the Scottish Highlanders are treated sympathetically. Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Lady Molly of Scotland Yard
By: MobileReference
Published by: MobileReference.com

This is an electronic edition of the complete book complemented by author biography. ***********. Best known as the creator of the Scarlet Pimpernel, The Baroness Orczy also created two immortal turn-of-the century detectives, the old man in the corner and Molly Robertson-Kirk otherwise known as Lady Molly of Scotland Yard. First published in 1910 Orczy’s female detective was precursor of the lay sleuth who relies on brains rather than brawn, the book soon became very popular, with three editions appearing in the first year. Interestingly, as well as being one of the first novels to feature a female detective as the main character, Orczy’s outstandingly successful police officer preceded her real life female counterparts by a decade. Lady Molly, like her fictional contemporaries, most often succeeded because she recognised domestic clues foreign to male experience. Her shocking entry into the male domain of the police is forgivable when it is discovered that her motive is to save her fiancé from a false accusation. Once her superior intuition has triumphed, Lady Molly very properly marries and leaves the force. — Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. . more...
