Fundamentals of Acoustics
By: Michel Bruneau; Thomas Scelo
Published by: International Scientific and Technical Encyclopedia (ISTE)

The objective of this book is to provide a fundamental grounding in acoustics necessary for an understanding of the scientific and technical literature in this area, while also presenting the major applications of acoustic engineering. The coverage is limited to acoustics in fluids and the methods explained most often use an analytical approach. The central theme of the eleven chapters is acoustic propagation in fluid media, dissipative or non-dissipative, homogeneous or non-homogeneous, infinite or limited; the emphasis being on the theoretical formulation of the problems considered rather than their practical aspects. more...

Master Handbook of Acoustics
By: Everest, F. Alton; Pohlmann, Ken C
Published by: McGraw-Hill/TAB Electronics

Practical Instruction on the Art and Science of Acoustic Design and Architecture. Build your own acoustic environments such as recording studios, control rooms, and home listening rooms with expert insights from two engineering professionals. Fully expanded to cover the latest methods and software tools, Master Handbook of Acoustics, Fifth Edition presents clear explanations of acoustic phenomena and provides a hands-on approach to room design. Learn how to perform acoustic measurements, choose room dimensions, assign speaker placement, analyze response curves, and design and install sound absorbers and diffusers. You will also find details on how to fine-tune room reverberation, minimize external noise, and apply psychoacoustic concepts. Master Handbook of Acoustics, Fifth Edition explains how to: Determine how sound propagates in open and enclosed spaces; Measure sound-pressure levels and work with decibels; Analyze the characteristics of room modal resonances; Treat rooms for optimal early reflections, reverberation, and diffusion; Minimize acoustic distortion, comb-filter effects, and HVAC interference; Construct high-quality stereo and surround-sound listening rooms; Design personal and professional recording studios and control rooms; Understand the acoustics of auditoriums and concert halls; Optimize room designs using measurement, modeling, and auralization software more...

Acoustic Absorbers and Diffusers
By: Cox, Trevor J.; D'Antonio, Peter
Published by: Taylor & Francis

Absorbers and diffusers are two of the main design tools for altering the acoustic conditions of rooms, semi-enclosed spaces and the outdoor environment. Their correct use is important for delivering high quality acoustics. This book describes how to effectively measure, model, design and apply diffusers and absorbers. more...

Acoustics
By: Filippi, Paul; Bergassoli, Aime; Habault, Dominique
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

The book is devoted to the very basis of acoustics and vibro-acoustics. The physics of the phenomena, the analytical methods and the modern numerical techniques are presented in a concise form. Many examples illustrate the fundamental problems and predictions (analytic or numerical) and are often compared to experiments. Some emphasis is put on the mathematical tools required by rigorous theory and reliable prediction methods. more...

Acoustics and Hearing
By: Damaske, Peter
Published by: Springer

When one listens to music at home, one would like to have an acoustic impression close to that of being in the concert hall. Until recently this meant elaborate multi-channelled sound systems with 5 or more speakers. But head-related stereophony achieves the surround-sound effect in living room with only two loudspeakers. By virtue of their slight directivity as well as an electronic filter the limitations previously common to two-speaker systems can be overcome and this holds for any arbitrary two-channel recording. The book also investigates the question of how a wide and diffuse sound image can arise in concert halls and shows that the quality of concert halls decisively depends on diffuse sound images arising in the onset of reverberation. For this purpose a strong onset of reverberation is modified in an anechoic chamber by electroacoustic means. Acoustics and Hearing proposes ideas concerning signal processing in the auditory system that explain the measured results and the resultant sound effects pleasing to the audience. more...

Architectural Acoustics
By: Long, Marshall; Levy, Moises; Stern, Richard
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Architectural Acoustics presents a comprehensive technical overview of the field at a level suitable for working practitioners as well as advanced undergraduate or introductory graduate architecture or engineering course. The book is structured as a logical progression through acoustic interactions. Beginning with an architectural history, it reviews the fundamentals of acoustics, human perception and reaction to sound, acoustic noise measurements and noise metrics, and environmental noise. It then moves into wave acoustics, sound and solid surfaces, sound in enclosed spaces, sound transmission loss, sound transmission in buildings, vibration and vibration isolation, noise transmission in floor systems, noise in mechanical systems, and sound attenuation in ducts. Chapters on specific design problems follow including treatment of multifamily dwellings, office buildings, rooms for speech, sound reinforcement systems, rooms for music, multipurpose rooms, auditoriums, sanctuaries, and studios and listening rooms. While providing a thorough overview of acoustics, it also includes the theory of loudspeaker systems and sound system modeling as well as an in-depth presentation of computer modeling, ray tracing and auralization. It will be particularly beneficial for architects and engineers working in fields where speech intelligibility, music appreciation, and noise isolation are critical. more...
